What to check on a 7L Touareg
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Propshaft centre bearing
What to look for: On the drive, accelerate gently from low speed up to motorway pace and feel for a vibration or drone through the floor that rises with road speed.
Why it matters: The propshaft bearing can fail from around 50,000 miles on all versions. It's a known repair, and rebuilt propshafts are now available, so it's a question of whether it has been done.
Automatic gearbox shifts
What to look for: On the drive, let the gearbox change down from fifth to fourth as you slow, and feel for a thump. Some hesitation on V8 and V10 cars is normal.
Why it matters: A thump on the fifth to fourth downshift on cars over 60,000 miles can mean the gearbox valve body is failing. It's a recognised repair, but worth finding before you buy.
Timing chain and limp mode on the 3.0 TDI
What to look for: On a 3.0 V6 TDI, start from fully cold and listen for a rattle from the engine. On the drive, watch for a warning light or a sudden loss of power.
Why it matters: The 3.0 TDI's timing chain tensioners and bearings can fail, and a chain rattle is the warning sign. Variable inlet manifold faults can also put the engine into limp-home mode; a repair kit is available.
