Skoda Octavia vRS Mk4 buying guide
The fourth Octavia vRS, on sale from 2020 as a hatch and estate, with a 245hp 2.0 TSI petrol or a 2.0 TDI diesel. A plug-in hybrid vRS also exists but isn't covered here. No common drivetrain or chassis problems have been found; its checks are recalls, software and a few rattles.
The versions
- 2.0 TSI turbo petrol (EA888), 245hp
- 2.0 TDI diesel, 200hp, with optional four-wheel drive
- Seven-speed DSG at launch, with a six-speed manual arriving slightly later; the petrol is front-wheel drive with an electronic VAQ differential
- Hatchback and estate; plug-in hybrid vRS not covered
What to check on a Mk4 Octavia vRS
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
DSG heat shield recall
What to look for: On a DSG car, ask a Skoda dealer to confirm against the VIN that the early 2024 heat shield recall has been completed.
Why it matters: DSG Octavias sold between 2020 and 2024 were recalled because a heat shield between the brake master cylinder and the exhaust could be incorrectly fitted, which could cause a fire. Dealers inspect and correct it.
Engine cover recall
What to look for: Open the bonnet and check the engine cover is firmly attached. Ask the dealer check to include the 2022 engine cover recall.
Why it matters: A 2022 safety recall covered engine covers that could be loosely attached. It's a quick check alongside the heat shield recall.
Infotainment software
What to look for: Spend a few minutes with the infotainment: pair a phone, play audio over Bluetooth, check Apple CarPlay appears, and watch for slow loading or a blank screen. Ask whether the car has had Skoda's software upgrades.
Why it matters: Most faults owners have reported on this generation involve the infotainment. Early cars in particular suffered crackling speakers over Bluetooth, lost saved settings, a missing CarPlay icon, inaccurate navigation, slow or blacked-out screens and even unprompted SOS messages. Skoda issued software updates to address them, so an updated car is the one to look for.
