Skoda Octavia vRS Mk3 buying guide
The third Octavia vRS, sold from 2013 as a hatch and estate with a 2.0 TSI petrol that grew from 220hp to 245hp, or a 2.0 TDI diesel, optionally with four-wheel drive. The engines are the improved later versions, and the known points are mostly small.
The versions
- 2.0 TSI petrol (EA888, timing chain): 220hp at launch, 230hp from 2015, 245hp from 2017
- 2.0 TDI diesel (EA288, timing belt), 184hp; four-wheel drive offered on the diesel only
- Six-speed manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic; the 245 petrol has a seven-speed DSG
- Hatchback and estate
What to check on a Mk3 Octavia vRS
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Clutch slip on manuals
What to look for: On the drive, select a high gear at low revs and accelerate firmly. Watch whether the revs rise without the car speeding up to match. Check the clutch bites cleanly when pulling away.
Why it matters: Clutch slip has been reported on manual cars, even at low mileage.
DSG "Workshop" warning
What to look for: On a DSG car, watch the dashboard on start-up and on the drive for a "Workshop" message, and check the gearbox selects drive and reverse promptly. Look for gearbox oil and filter changes every 37,000 miles.
Why it matters: A "Workshop" error on these gearboxes has been traced to a failing gear selector switch. The DSG oil and filter are due every 37,000 miles.
Diesel boost sensor recall
What to look for: On a diesel, ask a Skoda dealer to confirm against the VIN that the boost sensor recall has been done, if it applied to the car. On the drive, feel for hesitation when accelerating.
Why it matters: Some diesels were recalled to check and, if needed, replace the boost sensor and charge pressure transmitter, which could cause engine hesitation. Some diesel engines are also known to use oil, so check the level and that low-ash oil to VW's specification has been used.
