What to check on a BL Mazda3 MPS
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Turbo seals
What to look for: Let the engine idle for about 15 minutes, then accelerate hard on a clear road and have someone watch the exhaust for smoke. Note late or weak boost.
Why it matters: Worn turbo seals show up as smoke after a long idle, which is why the idle comes first. A clean exhaust after that test is a good sign.
A rattle or ticking on start-up
What to look for: Start the engine from cold and listen for a rattle or loud ticking in the first few seconds. On the drive, listen again for a chain rattle at around 2,000rpm. Ask whether the VVT actuator or timing chain has been replaced.
Why it matters: A rattle or loud ticking straight after start-up points to the variable valve timing actuator, and a chain that rattles at 2,000rpm should be inspected before you buy. Both are known on the MPS, and a car with the work on record has had the issue dealt with.
First to second gear and the differential
What to look for: On the drive, change from first to second several times. Note a notchy change. In a car park, drive slowly on full lock in both directions and listen for a grumble or rumble from the front.
Why it matters: A notchy first to second change can mean the gearbox oil needs changing. A rumble on full lock comes from the limited slip differential.
