Mazda3 MPS BK buying guide

The first Mazda3 MPS, built from 2006 to 2009, a front-wheel-drive hot hatch with a 2.3 direct-injection turbo engine, a six-speed manual and a limited slip differential. Its known faults are well understood and can be checked at the viewing.

The versions

  • 2.3 direct-injection turbo four-cylinder (MZR L3-VDT), 256bhp
  • Five-door hatchback, front-wheel drive, six-speed manual with a limited slip differential
  • Boost limited in first and second gear to tame torque steer, with full boost from third

What to check on a BK Mazda3 MPS

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. A rattle or ticking on start-up

What to look for: Start the engine from cold and listen for a rattle or loud ticking in the first few seconds. On the drive, listen again for a chain rattle at around 2,000rpm. Ask whether the VVT actuator or timing chain has been replaced.

Why it matters: A rattle or loud ticking straight after start-up points to the variable valve timing actuator, and a chain that rattles at 2,000rpm should be inspected before you buy. A car with the work on record has had the issue dealt with.

  2. Turbo seals

What to look for: Let the engine idle for about 15 minutes, then accelerate hard on a clear road and have someone watch the exhaust for smoke. Note late or weak boost.

Why it matters: Worn turbo seals show up as smoke after a long idle, which is why the idle comes first. A clean exhaust after that test is a good sign.

  3. The engine mounting bolt recall

What to look for: Ask a Mazda dealer to confirm against the VIN that the engine mount recall has been completed, or look for it in the history.

Why it matters: The MPS was recalled for an engine mounting bolt that could work loose. Most cars will have had the work done by now.
