Honda Civic Type R FL5 buying guide

The FL5 Civic Type R, on sale since 2023, with an uprated 2.0 VTEC Turbo K20C1, a six-speed manual and a limited slip differential. Cars are young and few owners have had problems, so the checks centre on recall work and how the car has been used.

The versions

  • Five-door hatchback, front-wheel drive, six-speed manual with limited slip differential
  • Adaptive dampers with Comfort, Sport, +R and Individual modes; 19in wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres
  • Brembo front brakes with 350mm two-piece discs

What to check on a FL5 Civic Type R

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Steering weight and its recall

What to look for: At low speed and when parking, turn the wheel from lock to lock. It should feel even and consistent. Note steering that becomes unusually heavy or makes abnormal noises, and ask a Honda dealer to confirm recall work against the VIN.

Why it matters: Some cars were recalled because the steering gearbox could have too much internal friction and become heavy. The fix is a new worm gear spring and fresh grease. Actual cases appear rare.

  2. Gearbox noises

What to look for: On the drive, change through all the gears, both gently and briskly, and listen for grinding as each gear goes in.

Why it matters: Some owners have reported occasional grinding noises from the gearbox. A smooth, quiet change is what you want, and any grinding should be investigated by a dealer while warranty or service plan cover may still apply.

  3. Signs of front-end impact

What to look for: Look at the bonnet and front bumper fit and finish, and check for any warning lights relating to the pedestrian safety system. Ask whether the front of the car has ever been repaired.

Why it matters: The FL5 has a pedestrian safety system with sensors and bonnet brackets that need replacing after a front impact, and resetting the system is a lengthy job. A repaired front end should come with evidence the system was put right.
