What to check on a FK8 Civic Type R
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Crunch from first to second
What to look for: On the drive, change from first to second several times, including one or two quicker changes. Note any grinding or resistance as second goes in.
Why it matters: A crunch or grind from first to second is the most commonly reported fault, inherited from the FK2's gearbox, though not every car has it. Honda fitted new clutch master cylinders and replaced some gearboxes. A smooth change is a good sign, and a car that crunches needs the cause established.
Cracks in the front brake discs
What to look for: Look through the front wheels at the face of each brake disc, around the drilled holes. Note any short hairline cracks running out from the holes. Some squeal from the Brembo brakes is normal.
Why it matters: Cracks starting at the drilled holes mean the disc needs replacing. They have been reported on both the original discs and the facelift's two-piece discs. Graunching front pads can also point to heavy track use.
Cracks where the roof meets the boot
What to look for: Open the tailgate and look along the seams where the roof meets the sides of the boot opening. Note any cracks in the paint or rust forming around them.
Why it matters: Cracking at this joint, with rust following, has been seen on FK8s and was treated as a warranty repair. Early attention keeps it from spreading, so ask whether any bodywork has been done under warranty.
