BMW X3 E83 buying guide
The first X3, built from 2003 to 2010 with four-wheel drive on every car and a facelift in 2006. It came with straight six and four-cylinder petrols and four- and six-cylinder diesels, with the 2.0d the most popular in the UK.
The versions
- Petrol six: 2.5i and 3.0i (M54), later 2.5si and 3.0si (N52); a 2.0i four-cylinder was also offered
- Diesel: 2.0d four-cylinder (N47 on later cars), 3.0d six-cylinder and the twin-turbo 3.0sd (286PS)
- xDrive four-wheel drive on all cars
- Manual or automatic gearbox
What to check on a E83 X3
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Timing chain on the later 2.0d
What to look for: On a 2.0d built after mid-2006, start the engine from cold and listen at the back of the engine, near the bulkhead, for a metallic rattle. Ask whether the timing chain has been replaced.
Why it matters: The later 2.0d can suffer timing chain failure. The chain is at the rear of the engine, so it's a time-consuming job to replace. Many cars have had it done, and that invoice is a strong point in a car's favour.
Swirl flaps on the earlier 2.0d
What to look for: On a 2.0d from 2004 to 2006, ask whether the swirl flaps in the inlet manifold have been removed or replaced, and look for an invoice.
Why it matters: On these earlier diesels the swirl flaps can break off and be drawn into the engine, where the fragments cause damage. Removing or replacing them is a common precaution, and paperwork for it is a good sign.
Turbo and particulate filter on the diesels
What to look for: On the drive, feel for smooth, strong boost with no whistle or hesitation, and watch for smoke or a particulate filter warning. Ask how the car has been used: lots of short trips is the pattern to note.
Why it matters: Turbo failures on the 2.0 and 3.0 diesels are common, mainly because the oil feed pipes become blocked over time. The particulate filter also needs occasional longer runs to get hot enough to clean itself.
