What to check on a G01 X3
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Recall work
What to look for: Ask whether all recall work has been done, and have a BMW dealer check from the VIN.
Why it matters: This X3 has had several recalls, covering a steering system component that could work loose, a rear spoiler that could come loose, seat frames, front suspension parts, airbags, front seatbelt buckles and seatbelts that could work loose. Most cars have been done, but it's quick to confirm.
Coolant loss on the M40i
What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant level in the expansion tank, and ask whether the seller has had to top it up. Look around the tank cap and the oil filter housing for dried coolant.
Why it matters: The B58 six-cylinder has a slight reputation for gradual coolant loss, often from the expansion tank cap, and some have leaked from the water pump or oil filter housing area. Replacing the cap and seal has cured it on many cars. The low coolant warning can be slow to appear, so a car with a steady level is a good sign.
Oil leaks on the M40i
What to look for: With a torch, look around the top of the engine for wet oil at the edge of the valve cover, and note any smell of burning oil after the drive. Watch for an engine warning light.
Why it matters: The B58 is susceptible to valve cover oil leaks and VANOS solenoid failures, and some have had crankcase breather valve or injector faults. All are known repairs.
