- 8-speed tiptronic torque converter automatic only
- Permanent quattro four-wheel drive, with an optional sport differential
- SUV and, from 2021, Sportback bodies
What to check on a second-generation SQ5
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Mild-hybrid starter-generator recall
What to look for: On an SQ5 TDI, give the chassis number to an Audi dealer and ask whether the starter-generator recall applies and has been done.
Why it matters: Mild-hybrid Q5 models built from 1 June 2017 to 31 March 2020 were recalled because moisture could get into the combined starter motor and alternator. Most have been done by now.
Brake and seat recalls
What to look for: Ask the dealer to confirm all recalls against the chassis number. On the drive, the brake pedal should feel firm with consistent travel. Check the front seat backrests adjust and lock properly.
Why it matters: Q5-range recalls cover brake pistons on some cars built March to May 2018, a master cylinder on some built August to November 2018, a caliper housing on some built January 2020, and front seat backrest adjusters on some built in late June and early July 2020.
Gearbox behaviour and servicing
What to look for: Pull away gently, creep and reverse, then accelerate hard. Changes should be smooth and quick. Look for gearbox oil and filter changes in the history.
Why it matters: Gearbox problems feature in owner reports on this SQ5, and regular oil and filter changes are what to look for. A car with them on record, along with quattro servicing, is the better buy.
