Audi SQ5 8R buying guide

The first SQ5, sold in the UK from 2013 to 2017 with a 3.0 TDI biturbo V6 diesel, an 8-speed tiptronic automatic and quattro. It avoids most of the issues reported on the standard Q5 3.0 TDI, and the known faults are few.

The versions

  • 3.0 TDI biturbo V6 diesel (CGQB), 313PS
  • Competition, 326PS, and SQ5 plus, 340PS, from 2016
  • 8-speed tiptronic torque converter automatic only
  • Permanent quattro four-wheel drive, with a sport differential on some cars

What to check on a 8R SQ5

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. EGR cooler and inlet manifold flaps

What to look for: Check the coolant level when cold and ask whether it needs topping up. On the drive, note any rough running, hesitation or an engine warning light. A diagnostic scan will show stored faults for the inlet flaps or EGR system.

Why it matters: EGR coolers have occasionally failed on this engine, linked to sticking inlet manifold flaps. A leaking cooler loses coolant. It affects a minority of cars, and records of the work are a good sign.

  2. The emissions software recall

What to look for: Give the chassis number to an Audi dealer and ask whether the emissions software update has been done.

Why it matters: Euro 6 SQ5 TDIs from 2015 to 2017 were part of a mandatory software recall approved by the German authority. The update is free. A car with it done is what you want.

  3. Hesitation or lost power

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly from low revs. It should pull hard and evenly. Note any flat spots or stuttering.

Why it matters: Carbon build-up in the intake is not unknown on this engine and shows as lost performance. It can be cleaned, and a car that pulls cleanly is unlikely to have a problem.
