What to check on a 8V RS3
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Cutting out or slow starting
What to look for: Ask whether the car has ever cut out at low speed or at idle, or refused to start for several minutes. Ask an Audi dealer whether the fuel pump module work has been done on this chassis number.
Why it matters: Some cars needed the fuel pump module under the rear seat replaced by Audi. Cars that haven't had it can cut out and log a low fuel pressure fault. Confirmation that it's been done settles the question.
The traction control light
What to look for: On the drive, note whether the traction light comes on repeatedly or flashes when pulling away firmly. Look for Haldex oil changes in the history.
Why it matters: A faulty Haldex pump shows itself this way. The fifth-generation coupling has no replaceable filter, so the pump and its strainer need periodic cleaning along with the oil changes.
Knocking from the rear
What to look for: On a bumpy road, listen for knocking or clonking from the back of the car. Look for paperwork showing the rear shock absorber mounts have been replaced.
Why it matters: Early cars left the factory with incorrect rear shock mounts, which knock. Most have been replaced by now, and the paperwork confirms it.
