The first RS3, a five-door Sportback built by quattro GmbH from 2011 to 2012, with the 340PS 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder from the TT RS, a 7-speed S tronic and quattro four-wheel drive. Around 750 right-hand-drive cars came to the UK.

  • 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic (DQ500); no manual was offered
  • quattro four-wheel drive with a Haldex coupling
  • Five-door Sportback only, with carbon fibre front wings, 370mm front brake discs and wider tyres at the front than the rear

What to check on a 8P RS3

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Every gear, and S tronic servicing

What to look for: On the drive, use manual mode to go up and down through every gear, and check reverse. All should engage cleanly. Jerky changes, dropping into neutral, or the gear selector or engine warning light coming on is the thing to note. Look for gearbox oil and filter changes in the history.

Why it matters: These symptoms usually come from the mechatronic control unit on the gearbox. Specialists advise an oil and filter change every 20,000 miles on this gearbox, and a car with regular gearbox services is the one to choose.

  2. The traction control light

What to look for: On the drive, note whether the traction control light comes on repeatedly, particularly when pulling away firmly. Look for Haldex oil changes in the history.

Why it matters: A repeatedly lit traction light can point to a failing Haldex pump. The coupling clogs quickly without oil changes; Audi's interval is 40,000 miles, but specialists often recommend 20,000.

  3. Driveshafts and propshaft (launch control use)

What to look for: From underneath with a torch, look for oil leaks around the bevel box behind the engine and around the driveshafts. Ask whether the car has been launched often.

Why it matters: Frequent launch control starts put heavy strain on the driveshafts and the propshaft coupling bolts. Upgraded bolt kits are available, and a car that hasn't been used for repeated launches is the easier buy.
