  • 2.0 TSI petrol, offered at launch
  • Manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic
  • Front-wheel drive, or 4Motion four-wheel drive with the top engine
  • The electric ABT eTransporter isn't covered here

What to check on a T6 Transporter

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. EGR warning light

What to look for: With the ignition on and then with the engine running, watch the dashboard for the yellow EGR warning light, and ask whether it has ever come on. On the drive, check the van starts easily and runs smoothly.

Why it matters: The yellow EGR warning light is well documented on the T6, and it can signal a serious issue, so it needs diagnosing rather than ignoring. A van with no warnings and a clear history is what you want.

  2. Coolant use

What to look for: With the engine cold, check the coolant level, and ask whether it has needed topping up. Watch the exhaust on start-up for white smoke.

Why it matters: Engine failures are very rare, and have mostly been linked to a faulty EGR valve letting coolant into the cylinders, so a steady coolant level is reassuring. Regular oil changes matter too, as running on old oil can badly damage these engines.

  3. Side window leaks

What to look for: On vans with factory-fitted side windows, look at the window seals and the trim and floor beneath them for water marks or damp.

Why it matters: Some vans have had leaks from the factory-fitted side windows. A dry interior is the sign to look for, especially on a camper conversion or a van with trim fitted.
