The versions

  • 2.0 TSI turbo four (EA113), 265hp; the 2014 facelift switched to the EA888 engine with 280hp

  • Front-wheel drive with the XDS electronic differential
  • Adaptive dampers with three modes on cars that have them

What to check on a Scirocco R

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Cam follower and PCV valve

What to look for: Look in the history for the fuel pump cam follower being replaced. With the engine running, pull out the dipstick: the engine should stumble. If it carries on as normal, the PCV valve needs replacing.

Why it matters: The cam follower that drives the high-pressure fuel pump can fail, and it's a small part best changed at a routine service. PCV and diverter valve failures, sticking thermostats, injectors and coils are the other known engine faults, all straightforward to fix.

  2. Cambelt and water pump

What to look for: Look for the cambelt, tensioners and water pump being changed at 80,000 miles or every four to five years. Listen for a rattle from the engine on a cold start.

Why it matters: The EA113 engine uses a belt to drive the camshafts and a short chain between them, and cam chain wear is a known fault. A recent belt change with the water pump is a sign of a car that's been looked after.

  3. DSG judder and clutch

What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently several times and feel for judder, and check for oil and filter changes every 40,000 miles. On a manual, check second gear goes in without a crunch.

Why it matters: Judder points to a mechatronic problem in the DSG. A crunch into second on a manual suggests past abuse. Many Rs are remapped, and at 300bhp or more the standard clutch can slip, so ask about any tuning.
