  • The Scirocco R has its own page

What to check on a Scirocco

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. DSG judder and recall

What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently from rest several times and in slow traffic, and feel for judder. Look for DSG oil and filter changes every 40,000 miles, and ask a Volkswagen dealer to confirm recall work.

Why it matters: Early DSGs can judder because of wear in the mechatronic control unit, and early 2.0 GTs with DSG were recalled over a fault that could disable drive. Otherwise both the manual and DSG have proved durable.

  2. Rear hatch struts on early cars

What to look for: Open the tailgate fully and check it stays up on its own. Look at the strut mounts at the top of the boot opening for rust.

Why it matters: Cars built between August 2008 and May 2009 had rear hatch strut mounts that rusted, and early gas struts could fail. Most should have been replaced under warranty, so it's worth confirming on an early car.

  3. Window and boot rattles

What to look for: On the drive, listen for rattles and squeaks from the side windows and the boot. Open each door and check the frameless glass drops and rises cleanly and the seal at the top is intact.

Why it matters: Rattles and squeaks from the boot and windows are the most reported faults, and the windows are the hardest to cure. In cold weather the frameless glass can stick to the seal and tear it.
