Volkswagen Polo GTI 6R/6C buying guide

The fifth-generation Polo GTI, sold in the UK from 2010 to 2017. Early cars have a 1.4 twincharger with a seven-speed DSG; the 2015 update brought a 1.8 turbo with the option of a six-speed manual.

The versions

  • 1.4 TSI twincharger (2010 to 2014), supercharged and turbocharged, 180hp; engine code CAVD, replaced by CTHD in late 2012
  • 1.8 TSI turbo (EA888, 2015 to 2017), 189bhp
  • 1.4: seven-speed DSG (DQ200) only
  • 1.8: six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG; the DSG is limited to the 1.4's torque

What to check on a 6R Polo GTI

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. DSG judder and hesitation

What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently several times from rest and in slow traffic. Note any juddering, bogging down, a moment of no drive followed by a jolt, or a missing reverse or sixth gear.

Why it matters: The seven-speed DQ200 dual-clutch gearbox has known faults with its mechatronic control unit solenoids, pressure loss from a cracked accumulator in the valve body, and worn selector forks. A smooth gearbox with history of updates or repairs is reassuring; the 1.8 manual avoids the issue altogether.

  2. Timing chain rattle on the 1.4

What to look for: Start a 1.4 from fully cold and listen at the front of the engine for a rattle in the first few seconds. Look in the history for timing chain or tensioner work.

Why it matters: The twincharger's timing chain tensioner can fail, typically around 60,000 miles, and chains can stretch. A slack chain risks jumping a tooth, so a replaced tensioner and chain is a sign of a car that's been looked after.

  3. Oil use and misfires on the 1.4

What to look for: Ask how much oil the car uses between services. Check the dipstick, and on a cold start feel for rough running or a flashing engine warning light.

Why it matters: Some 1.4 twinchargers use a lot of oil, usually because the seals around the turbo struggle with a pressure imbalance. Cold misfires were addressed with new coil packs, plugs and factory software updates, so the history should show those.
