What to check on a Mk5 R32
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Timing chain tensioner rattle
What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen for a rattle from the engine in the first few seconds. Look for timing chain tensioner work in the history.
Why it matters: The plastic timing chain tensioner wears and can let the chain rattle. The replacement part is small, and a record of it being done is a good sign. Coil packs can also fail and cause a misfire, so check the engine runs smoothly under load.
Haldex and DSG servicing
What to look for: Look in the history for Haldex coupling and rear differential oil changes every 40,000 miles, and on DSG cars for gearbox oil changes at the same interval.
Why it matters: The four-wheel-drive system and the DSG both need regular oil changes to stay healthy. Any missed services can be caught up, and a car with all of them done is a sign of an owner who knew the car.
DSG pull-away and recall
What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently from a standstill several times and check the shifts are smooth with no jerkiness. Ask a Volkswagen dealer to confirm any mechatronic recall work has been done.
Why it matters: The DSG is more durable here than in some earlier applications, but its mechatronic control module was subject to recall work. A smooth gearbox with the recall done is what you want.
