What to check on a Mk4 R32

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Timing chain tensioners

What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen for a rattle from the engine in the first few seconds. On a high-mileage car, look for paperwork showing the timing chain and tensioners have been replaced.

Why it matters: The timing chain tensioners are known to break, and that can cause serious engine damage, so it's the biggest single item on these cars. A quiet cold start and a record of the chain being done on a high-mileage car are reassuring.

  2. Hesitation at mid revs

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate steadily through 2,000 to 3,000rpm in a middle gear and feel for a flat spot or hesitation. Ask whether Volkswagen's 6463 update has been done.

Why it matters: Volkswagen issued update 6463 as a recall to cure a flat spot between 2,000 and 3,000rpm. Hesitation or poor running can also come from a faulty airflow meter or ECU, so a smooth pull through the range is what you want.

  3. Suspension clonks

What to look for: Drive over speed bumps and broken surfaces and listen for clonks from the front. Look behind each wheel for a broken coil spring.

Why it matters: Clonks usually come from worn strut top mounts or broken springs. Both are straightforward repairs, but they're worth knowing about, and lowered cars also tend to have worn differentials.
