What to check on a Mk8 Golf R
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
DSG paddles and manual mode
What to look for: On the drive, switch to manual mode and use the paddles for several minutes. Note any message that the gearbox has failed to proceed, or if it drops back out of manual mode until the car is restarted. Ask whether software updates have been applied.
Why it matters: Some Mk8.5 cars have had an intermittent fault where the gearbox drops out of manual mode, first linked to the steering wheel button modules and addressed by later software updates. Not every car has been cured, so it's worth testing at length.
Electrical and software glitches
What to look for: Test the touchscreen, phone pairing, every window, the central locking from the key and the app, all exterior lights and the climate control.
Why it matters: Software and electrical faults are the most common complaints on the Mk8 range, from slow touchscreens to windows moving on their own, central locking cycling and light faults on the 8.5. At least one Mk8 R had its climate control unit replaced under warranty. A car with its updates done and everything working is what you want.
Steering wheel buttons
What to look for: Use each of the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel and check they respond to a normal press. If the car has a heated steering wheel, switch it on and check it warms up.
Why it matters: The R kept touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons when the rest of the Golf range moved away from them. Later changes mean they need a firmer press, and some cars have had new button units fitted. Some heated steering wheels haven't worked as they should.
