Volkswagen Golf R Mk7/7.5 buying guide

The Mk7 Golf R arrived in the UK in March 2014 with a 2.0 turbo four and Haldex four-wheel drive. The 7.5 update brought more power and a seven-speed DSG, and an estate joined in 2015.

The versions

  • 2.0 TSI turbo four (gen-3 EA888), 300hp; 310hp after the 7.5 update, back to 300hp from late 2018 for WLTP
  • Six-speed manual (dropped in 2018), six-speed DSG, then seven-speed DSG from 2017
  • Haldex four-wheel drive
  • Three-door (dropped in 2019) and five-door hatchback, and a DSG-only estate from 2015
  • Performance Pack from November 2017, with the 155mph limit removed

What to check on a Mk7 Golf R

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Timing chain tensioner

What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen at the front for a rattle in the first few seconds. A check engine light can mean the chain has stretched beyond its adjustment.

Why it matters: The engine uses a chain rather than a belt, and you should get at least 100,000 miles from one, but the tensioner is the part more likely to fail. Chains have been known to snap, so a quiet cold start and on-time oil changes are reassuring.

  2. PCV valve

What to look for: With the engine running, pull out the dipstick and then put it back. The idle should change and then smooth out when it's reinserted. A rough idle on its own is also worth noting.

Why it matters: A faulty crankcase breather (PCV) system causes a rough idle, lower performance and higher fuel use, and if left can lead to the rear main crankshaft seal failing. The valve is a quick replacement.

  3. Haldex rear drive

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly from rest on a dry road and feel for front wheelspin. Look for Haldex oil changes every three years or 30,000 miles.

Why it matters: Some cars lose drive to the rear wheels. The cause is often simple, such as the four-wheel-drive control module fuse or the Haldex pump connector, though the pump itself can fail. A regular Haldex service is a sign of an owner who knew the car.
