Volkswagen Golf R Mk6 buying guide

The Mk6 Golf R swapped the R32's V6 for a 2.0 turbo four, with Haldex four-wheel drive and a manual or DSG gearbox. Few were built, so condition matters more than year.

The versions

  • 2.0 TSI turbo four (EA113), 267hp
  • Six-speed manual with a dual-mass flywheel, or six-speed DQ250 DSG
  • Haldex four-wheel drive
  • Adaptive Chassis Control (adjustable dampers) was an option, as were Recaro wingback seats

What to check on a Mk6 Golf R

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Cam follower and cambelt

What to look for: Look in the history for the high-pressure fuel pump cam follower being checked or replaced, and for a cambelt and water pump change every 60,000 miles or four years. Listen for a top-end rattle on a cold start.

Why it matters: The cam follower's coating is prone to early wear and, left alone, it can score the camshaft, but it's a quick part to change. A top-end rattle from cold usually means the cambelt is due. Water pump leaks aren't uncommon, so check the coolant level too.

  2. Haldex four-wheel drive

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate hard in first and second gear on a dry road. More than slight wheelspin from the front suggests the rear isn't being driven. Look for Haldex fluid and filter changes in the history.

Why it matters: Early Mk6 Rs suffered Haldex pump failures, sometimes caused by corroded pump wiring. A replaced pump is a known fix. The Haldex fluid and filter should be changed every 20,000 miles.

  3. DSG and clutch

What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently several times and check the shifts are smooth, and look for oil and filter changes every 40,000 miles. On a manual, listen for rattles at idle and feel for clutch slip.

Why it matters: The six-speed DQ250 DSG gives less trouble than the seven-speed DQ200 but isn't fault-free, and a faulty mechatronic unit is a big job. Manuals use a dual-mass flywheel that is best replaced together with the clutch.
