What to check on a Mk5 Golf
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
DSG lurching from rest
What to look for: On a DSG car, pull away gently several times from a standstill and in slow traffic. Note any lurch, jerk or hesitation. Ask for evidence of gearbox oil changes.
Why it matters: The DSG's mechatronic control unit can fail, especially where oil changes have been skipped. A lurch when pulling away is the usual early sign. A smooth gearbox with its oil changes on record is what you want.
Cam follower on the GTI
What to look for: On a GTI, look in the history for the cam follower being inspected or replaced, and ask the seller directly.
Why it matters: On the 2.0 FSI GTI engine, the cam follower between the high-pressure fuel pump and the camshaft can wear through and then damage the camshaft. The part itself is small and checking it is quick, so regular replacement is a sign of an owner who knew the car.
GTI boost and the diverter valve
What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly through the gears and feel whether the power keeps building smoothly to the top of the rev range. Ask about oil use between services.
Why it matters: A failed diverter valve can take away around 50bhp, so a flat-feeling GTI often has a simple fault. Carbon build-up on the inlet valves is also common on these direct-injection engines and can raise oil use; about a litre per 1,000 miles is typical for a healthy engine.
