What to check on a Mk4 Golf

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Misfires on the 1.8T

What to look for: On a 1.8T, start the engine and let it idle, then drive it under firm acceleration. Feel for stuttering or a sudden loss of power and watch for a flashing engine warning light.

Why it matters: Ignition coils proved troublesome on the 1.8T, and a failing coil causes a misfire under load. Most cars had replacement coils long ago, so look for that in the history. ECU faults could also cause misfires on early cars.

  2. Clutch wear

What to look for: On the test drive, pull away up a slope and accelerate hard in a high gear at low revs. Watch whether the revs rise without the car speeding up, and note where the clutch bites.

Why it matters: Clutches can wear out as early as 40,000 miles on this generation. A high biting point or slip means a replacement is due soon, so it is useful to know at the viewing.

  3. Gearbox bearing noise on high-mileage cars

What to look for: On the drive, listen for a whine or rumble from the gearbox in each gear, both accelerating and lifting off. Check every gear selects cleanly.

Why it matters: On high-mileage manual cars the gearbox bearings can wear, and a noisy gearbox is the usual sign. A quiet gearbox is what you want; a noisy one should be looked at by a specialist before you buy.
