Vauxhall Astra VXR H buying guide

The Astra H VXR, a hot hatch launched in 2005 with a 2.0 turbo and a six-speed manual, joined in 2008 by the Nürburgring Edition. Its known points are well documented, and most of them can be checked at the viewing.

The versions

  • 2.0 turbo four-cylinder, 240hp and 236lb ft
  • Six-speed manual only, front-wheel drive
  • Nürburgring Edition (2008): white paint, unique wheels and trim, a Remus exhaust adding 15hp, and a wider track

What to check on a Astra H VXR

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Gearbox jumping out of first or sixth

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly in first and in sixth, then lift off, and check the lever stays in gear each time. Listen for whining, especially in sixth. Ask whether the gearbox oil is changed regularly.

Why it matters: First and sixth gears are prone to failing, and the lever jumping out of them is the warning sign. Specialists put gearbox bearing wear down to oil that overheats and loses its protection, so an annual fluid change is a sensible precaution and a rebuild is the fix once it's noisy.

  2. Cambelt history

What to look for: Look in the history for the last cambelt change, with its date and mileage.

Why it matters: Vauxhall's official interval is 80,000 miles, but specialists consider around 45,000 miles the safe limit. A belt changed well inside the official interval is a sign of an owner who knows these cars.

  3. Turbo condition

What to look for: Listen for a warble as you come off boost, and for a grumbling noise from the turbo under load. Watch the exhaust for smoke, both at a cold start and on the drive.

Why it matters: Perished turbo vacuum lines cause a warble off boost. Grumbling with smoke points at worn turbo bearings and a new turbo, and the turbo actuator arm can fail. Smoke only on a cold start points at worn valve stem seals instead.
