Toyota MR2 W30 (Mk3) buying guide
The third MR2, a mid-engined two-seat roadster built from 1999 to 2007 with Toyota's 1.8 VVT-i engine. Later cars, from 2003, had a revised pre-cat system, and early cars are the ones that need the closest look at the engine.
The versions
- 1.8 VVT-i (1ZZ-FE), 138bhp, with a timing chain
- Five-speed manual, six-speed from the 2003 facelift; limited slip differential on UK cars
- Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT), optional from 2001, with ESP standard on SMT cars from 2003
- Two-seat roadster with a mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive
What to check on a Mk3 MR2
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Pre-cat failure and oil use on early cars
What to look for: Watch the exhaust in the mirror as you lift off the throttle at higher revs; note any blue smoke on the overrun. Ask how much oil the car uses between services. On a pre-2003 car, ask for a compression test, or for evidence of a rebuild or remedial work.
Why it matters: On early engines the ceramic pre-catalyst can break up and the debris can be drawn back into the engine, wearing the bores and rings and causing high oil use and lost compression. Facelift cars from 2003 have revised piston rings and a tougher catalyst, which makes the problem less likely. A documented rebuild is a real plus on an early car.
The SMT gearbox
What to look for: If the car has the SMT, drive it in both automatic-style and manual modes. Shifts should engage smoothly. Note jerky changes, hesitation or warning lights.
Why it matters: The SMT is a clutchless manual whose Bosch electronics are its known weak point, and replacement is often more practical than repair. Jerky shifts or warning lights need diagnosing before you buy.
Hood, rear window and drains
What to look for: Check the hood fabric for tears and look for cracks around the rear window. Feel the carpets behind the seats for damp, and check the drains by the side vents are clear.
Why it matters: Folding the hood incorrectly can tear it or crack it around the rear window. Blocked side-vent drains let water into the cabin behind the seats, so clear drains are a sign of a car that's been looked after.
