Toyota Celica T230 buying guide
The seventh-generation Celica, a front-wheel-drive coupé sold in the UK from 1999 to 2006 with two 1.8 engines: the VVT-i 140 and the high-revving VVTL-i 190. A well-maintained engine should reach around 200,000 miles.
The versions
- 1.8 VVT-i, 140bhp
- 1.8 VVTL-i, 189bhp, badged 190, added about a year after launch, with variable valve lift and shorter gearing
- Manual gearbox in UK cars; an automatic indicates an import
- T-Sport from 2001 with ESP and traction control; late 2002 facelift with a better interior and bigger front brakes; GT for the UK in 2005
What to check on a T230 Celica
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Oil use, especially on early 140s
What to look for: Check the dipstick before the engine is started and ask how often the car needs topping up. Look under the engine for oil leaks, often around the sump. Check for oil changes about every 6,000 miles.
Why it matters: Some oil use is normal, and a pint every 600 miles is not uncommon. Early 140s, before the 52 plate, can burn excessive oil; revised piston rings were fitted after that, and the 190 is more resistant. Oil leaks are also fairly common. Regular oil changes protect the timing chain too.
The 190's cam lift
What to look for: On a 190, with the engine fully warm, accelerate firmly in a low gear past about 6,200rpm on a clear road. You should feel a distinct extra surge as the lift engages. Note an engine management light, which on a 190 also disables traction control.
Why it matters: If the extra punch never arrives, the variable valve lift system needs investigating before purchase. The warning light is often linked to the airflow sensor, which cleaning sometimes cures.
Recall work on early and 2002 cars
What to look for: Check the build date, and look in the history or ask a Toyota dealer for confirmation that any recall work has been done.
Why it matters: Cars built from September 1999 to September 2000 were recalled in 2005 for brake master cylinders that could leak fluid, and cars built from March to November 2002 were recalled in 2003 for a fuel tank valve that could leak. Some of the earliest cars were also recalled in 2020 for Takata airbags. Most will have been done by now.
