What to check on a VA WRX STI
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Signs of ringland failure
What to look for: On the drive, listen for knocking under load, watch for smoke from the exhaust and note any lack of power. Ask whether the car has been remapped and by whom, and whether a compression test can be done before you buy.
Why it matters: The EJ257's pistons can crack between the rings, usually caused by detonation from low-octane fuel, hard full-throttle use at low revs or poor tuning. Low compression confirms it, and the fix is new pistons or a replacement engine. A standard or properly tuned car with good history is the one to look for.
Rod knock and oil pressure
What to look for: Listen for a deep, regular knock from the bottom of the engine that rises with revs. Check the oil level and look at the oil on the dipstick for any metal flakes. Look in the history for oil and filter changes about every 5,000 miles.
Why it matters: The connecting rod bearings can fail if the oil flow is restricted, and it's usually terminal for the engine. Frequent oil changes with genuine filters are the main protection, so a short, regular oil change history is a good sign.
Gearbox and clutch
What to look for: Work through every gear; a heavy, notchy shift when cold is normal. Grinding or crunching on upshifts, or a gear jumping out under load, is the thing to note. The clutch should have a clear biting point.
Why it matters: The six-speed manual is carried over from the previous STI and is strong, but hard use wears it. A gear jumping out can mean wear, or misalignment on a recently rebuilt gearbox. Clutch and release bearing problems are known on these cars.
