Subaru BRZ ZC6 buying guide
Subaru's rear-drive coupé, developed alongside the Toyota GT86 and sharing its running gear, with a 2.0 flat four and a manual or automatic gearbox. BRZs are rarer than GT86s in the UK, and the engine is very durable.
The versions
- 2.0 flat four petrol, 197bhp, with chain-driven camshafts and no cambelt
- Six-speed manual or six-speed torque converter automatic
- Two-door, four-seat coupé, rear-wheel drive
- Mechanically the same as the Toyota GT86 apart from the badges
What to check on a ZC6 BRZ
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Misfires and a grumbling fuel pump
What to look for: On the drive, feel and listen for misfires, a stumble or hesitation, especially as the revs rise. With the engine running, listen at the back of the car for a grumbling or whining fuel pump.
Why it matters: Misfires on these engines are cured with a revised engine map, so ask whether it has been done. A noisy, grumbling fuel pump is a known fault and should be replaced.
Oil leak at the cylinder head
What to look for: Look underneath the car where it has been parked for any drips, and with a torch look along the right-hand side of the engine at the join between the cylinder head and the block for wet oil.
Why it matters: An oil leak from the right-hand cylinder head gasket is a known point on this flat four. A dry engine with full dealer or specialist history is what to look for.
Changing into second when cold
What to look for: Before the car warms up, change from first to second a few times. Note how obstructive it feels, and whether it improves once the gearbox is warm. Check the clutch bites cleanly without slipping.
Why it matters: A stiff change into second, especially with the oil cold, is a known trait. A gearbox oil change can help, but the clutch may need realigning. The gearboxes are otherwise strong, and a clutch normally lasts around 40,000 miles.
