Skoda Octavia Mk3 buying guide
The third-generation Octavia, launched in March 2013 as a hatchback and estate with a wide range of TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, and facelifted in January 2017. It has a good reputation for reliability, and the checks centre on servicing and a few known leaks.
The versions
- Petrol: 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, 1.0 TSI (113bhp) and 1.5 TSI (148bhp) after the facelift, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI
- Diesel: 1.6 TDI (113bhp) and 2.0 TDI (148bhp)
- Six-speed manual, or DSG automatic (seven-speed with the 1.6 TDI and 1.4 TSI, six-speed with the 2.0 engines)
- Hatchback and estate; four-wheel drive on selected estates and the Scout; the vRS is covered separately
What to check on a Mk3 Octavia
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
DSG servicing and shift quality
What to look for: On a DSG automatic, check the history for gearbox servicing every 40,000 miles. On the drive, pull away gently, creep in traffic and accelerate briskly, and note any hesitation or jerky shifts.
Why it matters: The DSG needs servicing every 40,000 miles, and hesitancy or jerky shifts, particularly on high-mileage cars, are the signs of one that needs attention.
Timing belt or chain
What to look for: Check which engine the car has. On most, look for proof the timing belt has been changed around six figures. On a 1.8 or 2.0 TSI, listen for a rattle on start-up instead.
Why it matters: Most Mk3 engines use a timing belt that needs replacing at around 100,000 miles, so a high-mileage car should have the paperwork. The 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI use chains.
TSI water pump
What to look for: On a petrol, look under the engine for coolant leaks or crusty deposits, and watch that the temperature gauge stays at the midpoint on the drive. Listen for a whine from the engine bay.
Why it matters: Water pump failure affects the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, and premature failure is a common fault on the larger EA888 petrol engines too. Coolant on the ground, high temperatures, a warning light or whining are the warning signs.
