Renaultsport Mégane 250 / 265 / 275 buying guide
The Mégane 3 Renaultsport, sold from 2010 to 2016 with a 2.0 turbo and a six-speed manual, growing from 247bhp to 271bhp before the 275 Cup-S closed production in July 2016. Its weak points are well known and mostly show up as noises on a test drive.
The versions
- 2.0 turbo four-cylinder: 247bhp in the 250, 261bhp in the 265, 271bhp in the 275
- Six-speed manual (PK4), front-wheel drive
- Cup chassis: 35% stiffer springs, stiffer anti-roll bars and a mechanical limited-slip differential
- 265 Trophy (2011, around 50 for the UK), 275 Trophy-R (2015) and 275 Cup-S (2016)
What to check on a Mégane 250 / 265 / 275
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Gearbox whine
What to look for: On the drive, listen for a whine in each gear, under load and on the overrun. Look under the car where the driveshafts enter the gearbox for oil leaks, and for clutch fluid on the anti-roll bar.
Why it matters: Whining in any gear is often worn differential bearings, usually caused by leaking driveshaft oil seals, and normally means a gearbox rebuild or replacement. The PK4 gearbox bearings are a known weakness, and the clutch slave cylinder can leak fluid onto the anti-roll bar.
Cambelt, water pump and pulleys
What to look for: Look in the history for a cambelt and water pump change within the last six years or 75,000 miles. At idle, listen for a rattle from the cambelt end of the engine, and look around the rocker cover and sump for oil leaks.
Why it matters: The cambelt and water pump are due every six years or 75,000 miles, and some owners change them at five years. Rattly cambelt pulleys are a known issue that the belt change covers. Rocker cover gasket and bolt leaks are easy to put right if caught early.
Lower swivel joints and top mounts
What to look for: With the car stationary, turn the steering slowly to full lock each way and listen for creaking. On the drive, listen for a knock from the front over bumps, and look at the inner shoulders of the front tyres for heavy wear.
Why it matters: Creaking on full lock and a knock usually mean worn lower swivel joints; in severe cases the car becomes undrivable. The rubber top mounts are prone to splitting and the anti-roll bar drop links wear. Suspension, steering and driveline issues often appear around 40,000 to 50,000 miles.
