Renaultsport Clio 200 / 220 Trophy buying guide

The Clio 4 Renaultsport, sold from 2013 to 2019 as a five-door only, with a 1.6 turbo and a six-speed EDC dual-clutch gearbox. The 220 Trophy, launched in 2015, added more power, quicker gearchanges and a lower, firmer chassis. Its checks are mostly about the gearbox and its software.

The versions

  • 1.6 turbo four-cylinder from Nissan: 197hp (200PS) in the 200, 217hp in the 220 Trophy
  • Six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic only, front-wheel drive
  • 200 with an optional Cup chassis; 220 Trophy from 2015, lower and firmer on 18in wheels; RS18 limited run from 2018
  • Five-door hatchback only

What to check on a Clio 200 / 220

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. EDC gear selection at low speed

What to look for: On the drive, coast down to a roundabout or junction at low speed and pull away again, several times. Note any delay or failure to find a gear. Ask whether the gearbox software has been updated by a dealer.

Why it matters: Some early cars had trouble getting into the right gear, or any gear, when coasting into roundabouts at low speed. Software recalibrations sorted most of these issues, so a car with all the expected updates fitted is the one to look for.

  2. Gearbox temperature and limp mode

What to look for: Take a long enough drive for the car to get fully warm, including some brisk acceleration. Watch for a gearbox warning or the car dropping into a reduced-power limp mode. Ask whether the car has been used on track.

Why it matters: Rising gearbox temperatures can trigger limp mode on the dry-clutch EDC, more likely in hot weather or on track. Track-day use is common on these cars, so evidence of it calls for a closer look at the gearbox's behaviour.

  3. Ignition coils and power delivery

What to look for: Listen for uneven running at idle, and on the drive feel for misfiring or hesitation under firm acceleration. Look for an engine warning light.

Why it matters: Ignition coils are known to fail on these cars. Some early cars were also thought to make a little less than their advertised power.
