Porsche Cayenne 958 buying guide

The second Cayenne, built from 2010 to 2017, lighter than before and with an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Petrol V6 and V8 engines and V6 and V8 diesels were offered, with a 2014 facelift bringing a twin-turbo V6 to the S. A hybrid version exists but isn't covered here.

The versions

  • Cayenne: 3.6 V6, 300PS
  • Diesel: 3.0 V6 TDI, 245PS, then 262PS from 2014; S Diesel: 4.2 V8, 385PS
  • S: 4.8 V8, 400PS (to 2014), then 3.6 twin-turbo V6, 420PS; GTS: 4.8 V8, 420PS, then 3.6 twin-turbo V6, 440PS
  • Turbo: 4.8 twin-turbo V8, 500PS, then 520PS; Turbo S: 550PS, then 570PS
  • 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic (a manual was offered on the base V6 in some markets); steel springs or air suspension

What to check on a 958 Cayenne

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Shudder under light acceleration

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate gently through second and third gear with the car warm. It should be smooth. Note any lurching, shudder or vibration.

Why it matters: Transfer case problems are a common failure on the 958, showing up as rough power delivery. Many have been replaced, so ask for the invoice.

  2. Air suspension, if fitted

What to look for: Look at the car when you arrive: it should sit level, with no corner lower than the others. Cycle through the ride height settings and watch the instruments for a suspension warning. Listen for the compressor running for a long time.

Why it matters: Air struts can leak with age, and a noisy or failing compressor needs replacing. One sagging corner after standing overnight is the classic sign. Steel-sprung cars don't have this check. Air suspension was standard on the Turbo.

  3. Camshaft adjuster recall on early V8s

What to look for: On a 2011 model year S or Turbo, ask for evidence of recall work, or have a Porsche Centre check from the VIN.

Why it matters: Porsche recalled early V8 Cayennes because the camshaft adjusters could come loose inside the engine; the fix is new fastening screws. It's a free fix, and a car with it done is one less question.
