Porsche 911 Carrera 992 buying guide
The 992 Carrera, on sale from 2019, uses an evolution of the 3.0 twin-turbo flat six with a wider body for all models and an 8-speed PDK gearbox. It comes as the Carrera, Carrera S, 4, 4S, Targa 4 and 4S, the Carrera T and the GTS, with a facelifted 992.2 from 2024.
The versions
- 992.1 Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa 4: 3.0 twin-turbo flat six, 385PS
- 992.1 Carrera S and Carrera 4S: 3.0 twin-turbo, 450PS
- Carrera T and GTS versions were also built; the 992.2 GTS uses a hybrid system and isn't covered here
- Coupé, cabriolet and Targa bodies; Targa models are four-wheel drive
- 8-speed PDK dual-clutch, or a 7-speed manual on the Carrera T, S and 4S
What to check on a 992 Carrera
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Recall and campaign status
What to look for: Before you travel, ask for the VIN and check it on Porsche's recall website, or ask a Porsche centre to confirm all recalls and workshop campaigns are done.
Why it matters: The 992 has had recalls and service campaigns, including one for the bonding of the lightweight side and rear windows on certain cars. Wind noise or water getting in can be a sign of that one. Recall work is free, and a car with everything completed has been kept up to date.
Dynamic engine mounts on Sport Chrono cars
What to look for: If the car has Sport Chrono, drive in Normal and then Sport Plus. The car should feel firmer and more connected in Sport Plus, with no warning message on the dash and no rattle from the back.
Why it matters: Cars with Sport Chrono have dynamic engine mounts, and faults with them are not uncommon. On early cars, water getting in caused mount errors. A faulty mount can also rattle. A specialist's diagnostic read shows any stored faults.
PDK oil leaks and behaviour
What to look for: From underneath, look at the gearbox for fresh wet oil. On the drive, shift from D to R and back a few times and pull away gently. Changes should be prompt and smooth.
Why it matters: Oil leaks from the 8-speed PDK can affect 992 Carrera models from the 2020 to 2024 model years. Jerks in the drivetrain or long delays selecting D or R are worth having a Porsche centre or specialist look at.
