Peugeot 308 GTi T9 buying guide

The 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport, sold from 2015 to 2021 with a 1.6 THP turbo in 250 and 270 forms and a six-speed manual. The 270 adds a Torsen limited-slip differential and big Alcon front brakes. Reported problems are comparatively rare, and mostly electrical.

The versions

  • 1.6 THP turbo four-cylinder: 246bhp in the GTi 250, 268bhp in the GTi 270
  • The 270 was renamed the 260 (258bhp) in late 2018 to meet emissions rules, with performance largely unchanged
  • Six-speed manual only, front-wheel drive
  • GTi 270: Torsen limited-slip differential and Alcon four-piston front calipers on 380mm floating discs

What to check on a 308 GTi

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Oil changes and the timing chain

What to look for: Check the service history for oil and filter changes every year or 9,000 miles, with no gaps. At a cold start, listen at the engine for a rattle.

Why it matters: The 1.6 THP engine's reliability, and the health of its timing chain and tensioner, depend on regular oil and filter changes. A car serviced on time every year is a sign of an owner who has looked after the engine, and any rattle needs a specialist's opinion.

  2. The 270's Alcon brakes

What to look for: On a 270 or 260, look through the wheels at the 380mm front discs for a deep lip at the edge, and ask when the discs and pads were last replaced and what was fitted. On the drive, feel for shudder through the steering under braking.

Why it matters: The Alcon discs are only available through Peugeot dealers, so some owners have switched to the 250's set-up or to a two-piece aftermarket disc. Rebuild kits are available for the Alcon calipers. Knowing what's fitted, and how worn it is, tells you what the brakes will need next.

  3. Hesitation under acceleration

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly through the gears from low revs and feel for a slight hesitation or stutter. Look for an engine warning light, and check the history for spark plug changes.

Why it matters: A slight hesitation has been reported, usually down to a faulty coil pack or worn spark plugs, which should be changed every 12,500 miles. If it persists after those, the non-return valves in the fuel tank and the high-pressure fuel pump are the next things to check.
