Mitsubishi Shogun (2007–2019) buying guide

This Shogun, known as the Pajero elsewhere, was sold in the UK from 2007 to 2019 with a 3.2 turbodiesel in short and long wheelbase forms. Mechanically these are very durable, and the checks centre on a few known engine and electrical items.

The versions

  • 3.2 turbodiesel: 168bhp, rising to 197bhp after a late 2009 revision
  • Three-door short wheelbase or five-door long wheelbase, the long wheelbase with seven seats
  • Super Select four-wheel drive with modes 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc

What to check on a 2007 to 2019 Shogun

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Rattle from the engine

What to look for: Start the engine and listen at the front of the engine with the bonnet open, at idle and as the revs rise and fall. A rattle from the timing chain area is the thing to note.

Why it matters: The top timing chain guides can come loose and cause a rattling noise. Rattling from the engine also shows up in owner surveys of later cars, so any rattle is worth having diagnosed before buying.

  2. Erratic idle and flat acceleration

What to look for: Let the engine idle for a few minutes and watch the rev counter for hunting or a rough idle. On the drive, accelerate firmly and note any lack of power. Look around the engine for oil leaks, including near the oil pressure switch.

Why it matters: Fuel pump failures have been reported, causing erratic idle speeds. The EGR valve can also clog with carbon, which brings reduced power and rough idling. Some oil leaks from the oil pressure switch have been reported too.

  3. The four-wheel-drive system and towing wear

What to look for: Select each mode, 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc, as the handbook describes and check the dash confirms each one. On the drive, listen for whining from the gearbox and differentials and for crunching gear changes. Ask whether the car has towed, and look underneath for leaks from the driveshaft joints and gearbox.

Why it matters: Cars that have towed heavily or been off-roaded can show wear in the four-wheel-drive system, which shows as unusual noises. Whining gearboxes and differentials, crunching gears and driveline leaks are the signs of a car that has worked hard.
