Mini Cooper S F56 buying guide
The third BMW-era Cooper S, launched in 2014 with a 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder and updated in 2018 with a dual-clutch automatic option. It's a more grown-up car than its predecessors, and its checks are mostly about the clutch, mounts and a few known running issues.
The versions
- 2.0 turbo four-cylinder (B48), 192hp
- Six-speed manual; six-speed Steptronic automatic before the 2018 update, then a seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic
- Three-door hatchback
What to check on a F56 Cooper S
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Engine mounts
What to look for: Stand by the open bonnet while the engine is started and listen for a thud. On the drive, note any rattles or vibration at low revs that fade once you pass about 3,000rpm.
Why it matters: Broken engine mounts are a known fault on these cars, and a thud on start-up with rattles that disappear above 3,000rpm are the typical signs.
Clutch squeak and wear on manuals
What to look for: Press and release the clutch pedal a few times, from cold and again once warm, and listen for a squeak. On the drive, check the clutch bites cleanly without slipping in a higher gear, and note any drivetrain warning message.
Why it matters: A squeaking clutch is common and can come back even after a full clutch replacement, though adjustment sometimes cures it. Some cars have needed a clutch and flywheel at low mileage, so a slipping clutch is a significant point. Jerky gearchanges are often caused by a clutch delay valve in the slave cylinder.
High idle, ticking and low-speed jerkiness
What to look for: Let the car idle and note whether the revs sit higher than expected, and listen for a ticking noise from the back of the car. On the drive, hold a steady 1,500 to 2,000rpm and feel for jerkiness. Ask whether the software has been updated.
Why it matters: Faulty fuel tank vent valves cause a high idle and a ticking noise. Jerkiness at a steady 1,500 to 2,000rpm is typically solved by a software reflash at a dealer or specialist. Turbo wastegate fault codes have been linked to an old or original battery giving unstable voltage.
