What to check on a R230 SL
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
The Vario roof and a damp boot
What to look for: Operate the roof fully open and closed at least twice, listening for creaks as it closes. Then lift the boot floor and look for damp or water around the second battery and in the spare wheel area.
Why it matters: The Vario roof fails with age and neglect, but specialists can fix most faults. Water getting into the boot is common, usually from roof seals or blocked drains, and damp around the second battery under the boot floor causes havoc because that battery powers most of the electronics. Cars from 2006 have better roof sealing, and earlier roofs can be upgraded.
Active Body Control suspension
What to look for: Listen for a humming noise from the front of the car with the engine running. Check the car sits level and stays level over the drive, and with a torch look under the car at the suspension pipes for rust and wet fluid.
Why it matters: Active Body Control relies on a hydraulic pump. Rusty pipes or leaky seals let it run dry and fail, and a humming noise can point to failing ABC accumulators. Specialists repair these systems, and 2006-on ABC parts fit earlier cars, so they can be upgraded.
The SBC brakes
What to look for: Watch for any brake warning message on the dashboard, and ask a Mercedes dealer, with the registration or VIN, whether the SBC recall work has been done. Ask whether the SBC unit has ever been replaced.
Why it matters: The Sensotronic Brake Control system was the subject of recalls, so confirm the car has been seen. The unit is designed for about 100,000 miles, after which it goes into a limp mode, so its history matters on a higher-mileage car.
