What to check on a 2018-on G63

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Leaking seals

What to look for: Look at the ground where the car has been parked for oil stains, and with a torch look where the engine meets the gearbox and around the steering for wet oil. After the drive, watch for white smoke from under the car.

Why it matters: Early low-mileage cars were reported with leaking seals, including the rear main seal and seals in the steering. Oil from the rear main seal dripping onto the hot exhaust causes clouds of white smoke. A dry underside is a good sign.

  2. Wind noise and vibration at speed

What to look for: On a dual carriageway, listen for a whistle at speed and switch the air conditioning off to see if it stops. Watch the door mirrors above 55mph for vibration.

Why it matters: A whistle at speed is usually a faulty window seal rather than an air vent, and these seals were fixed under warranty. Some owners also had mirror vibration above 55mph, sometimes cured by securing loose caps at the bottom of the mirror housings.

  3. Suspension springs

What to look for: On the drive, go over speed bumps or rough ground and listen for a loud thumping from the suspension. Look underneath for scrapes and damage that suggest heavy off-road use.

Why it matters: Springs on this G-Class can break after heavy off-road use, and a loud thump over bumps is probably a broken spring. Signs of hard off-roading are worth weighing up.
