What to check on a W213 E63
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Engine warning light and ignition coils
What to look for: Check the engine warning light comes on with the ignition and goes out once the engine starts, and stays out on the drive. Feel for any misfire or stutter under load. Ask whether the ignition coils have been replaced.
Why it matters: A batch of faulty ignition coils caused engine warning lights on some cars, and they were replaced under warranty. A car with the work on record has had the fix.
Battery health and stop-start
What to look for: Ask how old the battery is and whether the car has been kept on a battery conditioner if it sits unused. Check that stop-start works normally in traffic and look for any battery warning messages.
Why it matters: Blown diodes in the stop-start system can leave the car stranded, usually brought on by a battery in poor condition. A healthy battery is the best protection, so a recent battery or regular use is a good sign.
Rear suspension and differential modules
What to look for: On the drive, switch through the suspension modes and watch for any suspension or drivetrain warning messages. Park on level ground afterwards and check the rear sits at the right height.
Why it matters: Earlier cars had software and hardware problems with the rear air suspension, and some control modules for the rear suspension and the rear differential have failed. Invoices showing any such work done are reassuring.
