Mazda MX-5 NC (Mk3) buying guide
The third MX-5, built from 2005 to 2015 with 1.8 and 2.0 MZR engines, as a soft-top roadster and, from 2006, with a power-folding hardtop. Facelifts came in 2009 and 2013. It rusts less than the earlier cars, and its known faults are straightforward to check.
The versions
- 1.8 MZR (L8-VE), 125bhp, five-speed manual
- 2.0 MZR (LF-VE), 158bhp, six-speed manual with a limited slip differential; the 2009 facelift brought a revvier version
- Soft-top roadster, and the power-folding hardtop Coupé Cabriolet from 2006
- 2009 facelift: revised engine, suspension, bumpers and trim; 2013 facelift: new grille, lights and wheels
What to check on a Mk3 MX-5
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Timing chain tensioner
What to look for: Start the engine and listen for a rattle from the front of the engine, and for any rumble at idle. Check the oil level on the dipstick. On a car past about 70,000 miles, ask for proof that the tensioner has been replaced or upgraded.
Why it matters: Both engines have a timing chain rather than a belt, but early cars have a weak chain tensioner that can fail. A rumble at idle, especially on a 1.8, can point to an engine that has been run low on oil, so a correct oil level and regular changes are a good sign.
Misfires from the ignition coils
What to look for: Let the engine idle, then accelerate firmly through the gears. Note any stumble, shake or hesitation, or a flashing engine light.
Why it matters: Early and high-mileage cars can have thin coil wiring that frays or breaks, causing misfires at idle or under acceleration. The usual fix is repairing the wiring and fitting new coils and spark plugs.
Drains, damp and rust
What to look for: Check the carpets, under the seats and the parcel shelf for damp. Look at the plastic panel beneath the wipers to see it is clipped down firmly. Look at the sills and subframe mounts from underneath and in the MOT history for corrosion advisories.
Why it matters: Blocked soft-top and bonnet drains, or a loose wiper panel, let water into the cabin, and many electrical components sit in the seats and under the carpets. Rust is less common than on earlier MX-5s, but older and high-mileage cars can need welding.
