What to check on a XE20 IS

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Oil level and carbon build-up on the IS250

What to look for: Check the oil level on the dipstick and ask how often the car needs topping up. On the drive, note any rough idle, hesitation or flat spots, particularly when accelerating from low revs.

Why it matters: The IS250's direct-injection V6 can suffer from carbon build-up, which affects how smoothly it runs, and owners need to keep an eye on the oil level. A car with regular oil checks recorded is a sign it's been looked after.

  2. Timing chain tensioners and oxygen sensors

What to look for: Start the engine from cold with the bonnet up and listen for a rattle from the engine in the first few seconds. Check the engine warning light comes on with the ignition and goes out once running.

Why it matters: On the IS250, timing chain tensioners and oxygen sensors are known failure points. A rattle at start-up points to the tensioners, and a failing oxygen sensor usually lights the engine warning light. Both are known, fixable items.

  3. Power steering feel and leaks

What to look for: With the engine running, turn the steering from lock to lock and listen for whining. Look under the bonnet around the steering pump and pipes for fluid wetness. On the drive, check the steering weight feels consistent.

Why it matters: The power steering on this generation can be unreliable, so consistent weight and no leaks are what you want to find.
