Land Rover Freelander 2 buying guide

The second Freelander, sold from 2006 to 2014 with a facelift in 2010. Most are TD4 or SD4 diesels with four-wheel drive, and it's a capable, comfortable family 4x4 that suits a buyer who checks the known points.

The versions

  • TD4 2.2 diesel, 158bhp at launch and 150PS after the 2010 facelift, manual or automatic; TD4_e with stop/start from 2009
  • SD4: the same 2.2 diesel at 190PS, automatic only, from the 2010 facelift
  • eD4 two-wheel-drive diesel from 2010 to 2012 (rare)
  • i6 3.2 petrol, 230bhp, automatic only, 2006 to 2009
  • Four-wheel drive (except eD4), sending most drive to the front and more to the rear when slip is detected

What to check on a Freelander 2

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Rumble from the rear differential

What to look for: On the drive, find a quiet road with the radio off and listen for a low rumble or drone from the back of the car that changes with speed. Listen too for a hum from the rear wheels that changes as you weave gently.

Why it matters: A low rumble from the back can signal trouble with the rear differential, which is a known weak point on the Freelander 2. Rear wheel bearings also wear out and make a similar noise, so a specialist can tell which it is.

  2. Dual-mass flywheel on manual cars

What to look for: On a manual, let the engine idle in neutral and listen for a rattle or knock from where the engine meets the gearbox, then press the clutch to see if it stops. On the drive, pull away gently in a high gear and feel for judder or shudder.

Why it matters: Faulty dual-mass flywheels are a known problem on the manual Freelander 2, and a rattle at idle or judder when pulling away are the usual signs. A replacement is normally done with a new clutch, so invoices showing both are a plus.

  3. Diesel fumes and fuel leaks

What to look for: With the engine running, sit inside with the windows shut and notice any diesel fumes or smell in the cabin. Under the bonnet, look and sniff for diesel around the injectors and fuel rail on top of the engine.

Why it matters: Fumes in the cabin can point to injector trouble, usually fixed by renewing the injector washers. Diesels built from January 2012 to October 2013 were recalled because the fuel rail could leak, so check that work has been done.
