  • 2.0 Ingenium petrol (2017 on): 197bhp, 247bhp and 296bhp
  • 3.0 V6 diesel, 296bhp, and 3.0 supercharged V6 petrol, 375bhp
  • Saloon and Sportbrake estate; all Sportbrakes are automatic

What to check on a X260 XF

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Timing chain rattle on the 2.0 diesel

What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen for a rattle or knock in the first seconds. Look in the history for any timing chain work and for oil changes on time.

Why it matters: Jaguar's four-cylinder diesels can suffer timing chain problems, particularly if servicing has been neglected, and a particulate filter that struggles to regenerate can dilute the oil with diesel and speed up chain wear. A cold-start rattle needs investigating before purchase.

  2. Short trips and the particulate filter

What to look for: Ask how the car has been used and whether it has shown particulate filter warnings. Look for evidence of regular longer runs and oil changes at or before the due date.

Why it matters: Short journeys stop the diesel particulate filter from regenerating, and failed regenerations let diesel dilute the engine oil, which speeds up wear on the chain and bearings. Owners have had filter problems on this XF. A car that has done mostly longer journeys, with frequent oil changes, is the one to look for.

  3. Auxiliary belt on early 2.0 diesels

What to look for: Check the history for the June 2016 auxiliary belt recall on early 2.0 diesels, and for belt replacement at the scheduled service: every fifth service on the 2.0 diesel and every sixth on the 3.0 diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol.

Why it matters: On affected early 2.0 diesels the belt could fail, causing overheating and loss of power steering assistance. The recall and the scheduled replacements deal with it.
