What to check on a XE
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Timing chain rattle
What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen for a rattle or knock in the first seconds. Look in the history for regular oil changes and any timing chain work.
Why it matters: Jaguar's four-cylinder engines can suffer timing chain wear, linked to poor lubrication on early engines and to neglected servicing. A quiet cold start and a full, on-time service history are what you want to see.
Fuel recall work
What to look for: Ask a Jaguar dealer to check outstanding recalls against the VIN, and look and smell under the car for fuel.
Why it matters: The XE had several fuel recalls: a fuel feed that could detach and stall the engine on cars built to February 2016, a diesel fuel cooler on cars built to June 2016, a fuel return hose (November 2016 to April 2017 builds) and a petrol fuel rail (September 2016 to August 2017 builds). Most cars have had the work done by now.
Vibration at idle
What to look for: With the engine warm and idling in gear with your foot on the brake, feel for vibration through the steering wheel, seat and floor.
Why it matters: The engines sit on sophisticated mounts that can fail and cause vibration, most noticeably at idle. New mounts are the only cure, so it's best checked at the viewing.
