What to check on a F-Type
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
Rear differential leaks and noise
What to look for: Look under the back of the car at the differential for fresh oil, especially around its main seal at the front. On the drive, listen for whine or rumble from the rear, on and off the throttle.
Why it matters: The differential oil seals are a known weak point, and a leak left alone leads to early wear inside the diff. Noise from the rear is the sign that wear has started. A dry diff and a quiet rear end are what you want to find.
Active exhaust valves
What to look for: With the engine running, press the exhaust button and listen for a clear change in volume. An exhaust that is loud all the time, or never changes, has a stuck valve.
Why it matters: The switchable flaps in the rear silencer can seize, often from lack of use. The usual fix is a new rear silencer, and Jaguar often covered it under warranty, so ask whether it has already been done.
Timing chain noise on the V8
What to look for: On V8 cars, start the engine from fully cold and listen at the front of the engine for a rattle in the first seconds. Ask whether the timing chain tensioners have been replaced.
Why it matters: V8s can suffer from noisy timing chain tensioners. They sit low in the engine, so replacing them is a long job, which makes a quiet cold start and any paperwork for the work worth checking.
