What to check on a F-Pace

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Timing chain rattle on the 2.0 diesel

What to look for: Start the engine from fully cold and listen for a rattle or knock in the first seconds. Look in the history for timing chain work and for oil changes on time.

Why it matters: The 2.0 diesel can have timing chain problems, made worse by neglected servicing. A quiet cold start and a full, on-time history are what you want; a rattle needs investigating before purchase.

  2. Short trips and the particulate filter

What to look for: Ask how the car has been used and whether it has shown particulate filter warnings. Look for evidence of regular longer journeys.

Why it matters: Short journeys stop the diesel particulate filter from regenerating, which lets diesel dilute the engine oil and speeds up wear, including on the timing chain. A diesel that has done regular longer runs is the better buy.

  3. Knocking from the 3.0 diesel

What to look for: On 3.0 V6 diesels, listen for any unusual knocking from the engine, and check it runs smoothly from cold and when warm.

Why it matters: Some 3.0 diesel F-Paces have had crankshaft failures, so a knock is a reason to have the engine checked before buying. A smooth, quiet engine is the norm.
