Ford Puma ST buying guide

The Puma ST went on sale in late 2020 with a 1.5 three-cylinder EcoBoost and a six-speed manual, with an optional Performance Pack adding a Quaife differential. It's a young car with a short list of known issues.

The versions

  • 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo petrol, 197hp and 236lb ft, six-speed manual, front-wheel drive (2020 to 2024)
  • Performance Pack: Quaife limited-slip differential, launch control and shift lights
  • Gold Edition: 999 built, 350 for the UK, with the Quaife differential
  • From 2024 a 1.0 mild hybrid with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic replaced the 1.5; it isn't covered here

What to check on a Puma ST

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. Stuttering under load

What to look for: On the drive, accelerate firmly in third and fourth gear and feel for any stutter or hesitation, with or without a warning light. Check the history for spark plug changes.

Why it matters: Some of these engines stutter randomly under load with no warning light. Suggested causes include worn spark plugs, a faulty camshaft position sensor or contaminated fuel. Ford's spark plug interval on the Puma is two years, so plugs on time are a good sign.

  2. A creak from the steering

What to look for: With the car stationary and then moving slowly, turn the steering towards full lock in each direction and listen for creaking or a metallic 'ching' from the front.

Why it matters: Some STs creak or make a 'ching' noise when steering lock is applied, and at least one owner was told the car needed new steering rack bolts. A quiet steering action is what you want to find.

  3. Recall work

What to look for: Ask a Ford dealer, or check the DVSA recall checker, for outstanding recalls on the car.

Why it matters: Very early Pumas were recalled to fix driver's airbag retention springs, and later recalls covered the eCall emergency system software and engine oil separators that may have been damaged before assembly. Most cars will have had the work done.
