Ford Focus Mk3 buying guide
The third-generation Focus was built from 2011 to 2018 with EcoBoost and naturally aspirated petrol engines, TDCi diesels and petrol and diesel ST models, and was facelifted in 2014. Most of its known issues are tied to particular engines and gearboxes, so it helps to know which you're looking at.
The versions
- 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo petrol (from 2012), 1.5 EcoBoost and 1.6 petrol
- 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi diesels; 1.5 diesel after the 2014 facelift
- ST: 250hp petrol or 185hp diesel, hatchback or estate
- Manual, or the Powershift dual-clutch automatic; the dry-clutch Powershift was dropped from lower-powered models in 2015
- The Focus RS Mk3 has its own page
What to check on a Mk3 Focus
3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.
1.0 EcoBoost coolant hose
What to look for: On a 1.0 EcoBoost built from 2012 to early 2013, ask for evidence that the updated coolant degas hose has been fitted; a Ford dealer can confirm it. Check the coolant level with the engine cold.
Why it matters: Early 1.0 EcoBoost engines were known to leak coolant, which could lead to overheating and engine failure. Ford fitted a modified hose, usually during a scheduled service, so most cars will have had it.
Powershift automatic
What to look for: On an automatic, pull away gently several times and drive in slow traffic, noting any judder, hesitation or clunks. Check the history for gearbox fluid and filter changes every three years.
Why it matters: The early dry-clutch Powershift used on lower-powered models has a troublesome reputation. In 2015 Ford replaced it with a more durable wet-clutch Powershift on the diesels and the 1.6 petrol. Fluid and filter changes every three years help it last.
Diesel particulate filter
What to look for: On a diesel, ask what kind of journeys the car has done, and watch the dashboard for any warning light on the drive.
Why it matters: The diesel particulate filter needs regular longer runs to clean itself. A car used mostly for short journeys can block its filter, which is a significant repair.
