Ford Fiesta ST Mk7 buying guide

The Mk7 Fiesta ST was built from 2013 to 2017 with a turbocharged 1.6 EcoBoost and a six-speed manual, in ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3 trims, plus the ST200 from 2016. It has a short list of known issues, most of which are easy to check.

The versions

  • 1.6 EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder petrol, 182hp, six-speed manual
  • ST200 (2016): 200hp, shorter final drive, about 1,000 UK cars
  • ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3 trims (ST-3 from 2014); five-door ST-2 and ST-3 from September 2016
  • Mid-2015 chassis update: softer rear dampers and a thicker front anti-roll bar; LED rear lights from September 2015

What to check on a Mk7 Fiesta ST

3 model-specific things to look at when you view one. They're a starting point, not the full inspection.

  1. The coolant system recall

What to look for: Ask for proof that the recall work has been done on any car built before 20 December 2014. Under the bonnet, look for a coolant header tank with a level sensor and rubber, not plastic, pipework between the tank and the cylinder head.

Why it matters: On early cars the plastic coolant pipework could break and let coolant escape with little warning, which can crack the cylinder head. Ford's March 2017 recall fitted rubber pipework and a new header tank with a level sensor. Most cars will have had it done by now.

  2. A rattle from the high-pressure fuel pump

What to look for: With the bonnet open and the engine idling, listen at the top of the engine for a rattle. On the drive, note any flat spots or poor performance, and black smoke from the exhaust.

Why it matters: The high-pressure fuel pump is driven from the camshaft through a bucket that can wear. As it wears the engine runs badly, and if it's left the camshaft can be damaged. A specialist can check fuel pressure, which should be 170 to 200 bar.

  3. Knocking from the engine mounts

What to look for: On the drive, get on and off the throttle and listen for a clonk from the engine bay, especially under load.

Why it matters: The subframe-to-gearbox mount wears quickly, and the offside engine mount can clonk under load. Uprated mounts are the cure.
